After a wee wait on the mountain bike side of things, Shimano have just launched the new XTR M9200 groupset, with every component in the range getting a revamp. The big news is the move to wireless shifting, but there's more to the range than that!
We had a sneak peek and test ride of the new range in Spain back in February, so we'll publish our more detailed writeup of that soon. In the meantime, scroll down for details and prices on the new XTR range.
XTR M9200 Drivetrain
The one grabbing the main headlines from the new XTR groupset will undoubtably be the drivetrain. It’s Shimano’s first fully wireless Di2 setup, with a rechargeable battery in the mech or ebike versions which hardwire to the bike.
The new M9200 groupset is 12 speed - and although there’s a new cassette with refined shifting profiles, this setup is fully backwards compatible with all Shimano 12s mountain bike chains, cassettes and chainrings - giving the option to upgrade your existing bike without needing to buy a full groupset. The mech fits to a standard hanger, including UDH - so fits basically every bike!
There is an additional ratio option, with a 9-45t cassette and matching short cage mech. This setup is lighter - and with a smaller chainring gives better ground clearance at the mech and at the chainring.
We were lucky enough to be invited to Spain back in February to test the new XTR and unsurprisingly we were mightily impressed. Shimano Hyperglide+ has always shifted well under load and this new wireless option is no different. The shifter is super neat - with a really positive feel, we felt at home right away.

XTR M9200 and M9220 brakes
Alongside the headline grabbing wireless drivetrain, Shimano have also announced new brakes as part of the XTR launch.
We’re keen that these don’t get lost behind the drivetrain news - as when we were out testing with Shimano these really impressed us! There’s a lighter 2 piston version with the option of a simpler, lighter lever - but we’re going to concentrate on the 4 piston trail/enduro brake that appeals to the majority of our customers.
A new mineral fluid with a lighter viscosity gives a consistent feel no matter the temperature - no more wandering bite point! Shimano have moved the lever pivot closer to the bar and canted the lever at a 5 degree angle to give a more natural feel. In use, these brakes have plenty of predictable power and a great feel at the lever - another winner!
Just as the drivetrain has backwards compatibility, the brakes work with previous generation rotors, or you can match everything with the latest version. With that in mind, there’s a brake upgrade kit which includes both levers, calipers and hoses - plus a small bottle of the new fluid.
- Shimano XTR M9200 XC Brake (lever, hose, caliper), £230
- Shimano XTR M9200 XC Brake upgrade kit (2 complete brakes as above, plus fluid), £460
- Shimano XTR M9220 Trail/Enduro Brake (lever, hose, caliper, £250
- Shimano XTR M9220 Trail/Enduro Brake upgrade kit (2 complete brakes as above, plus fluid), £500
Wheels and hubs
Shimano like to complete the groupset package with wheel and hub options, sadly often overlooked here in the UK.
There's M9200 (XC) or M9220 (Trail/Enduro) wheels, both featuring new hubs with cartridge bearings for longevity and ease of repair. Carbon rims keep things tough and light - with titanium spokes saving those precious grams on the XC M9200 wheels.
- Shimano M9200 Wheelset, £1700
- Shimano M9220 Wheelset, £1250
Prefer a different rim brand? We can always help there!
- Shimano M9210 Front hub, £125
- Shimano M9210 Rear hub, £265
We have our first drop of the new XTR products landing imminently, so take a look at the range here or give us a shout if you're keen on getting something on your bike!
